2012 May - Sepsis-associated changes of the arachidonic acid metabolism and their diagnostic potential in septic patients
Bruegel M, Ludwig U, Kleinhempel A, Petros S, Kortz L, Ceglarek U, Holdt LM, Thiery J, Fiedler GM.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1478-86.
Objectives: Sepsis-associated changes of the arachidonic acid metabolism and the utility of arachidonic acid metabolites for the diagnosis of sepsis have been poorly investigated so far. Therefore, the primary objective of our study was to screen for differentially regulated arachidonic acid metabolites in septic patients using a lipopolysaccharide whole-blood model and to investigate their diagnostic potential.
2012 May - Active surveillance cultures of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a tool to predict methicillin-resistant S. aureus ventilator-associated pneumonia
Chan JD, Dellit TH, Choudhuri JA, McNamara E, Melius EJ, Evans HL, Cuschieri J, Arbabi S, Lynch JB.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1437-42.
Objective: Ventilator-associated pneumonia is one of the most common infections in the intensive care unit and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as a common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia. We sought to study the performance characteristics of once weekly active surveillance culture of methicillin-resistant S. aureus colonization in predicting the development of methicillin-resistant S. aureus ventilator-associated pneumonia.
2012 May - Antibiotic strategies in severe nosocomial sepsis: Why do we not de-escalate more often?
Heenen S, Jacobs F, Vincent JL.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1404-9.
Objectives: To assess the use of antibiotic de-escalation in patients with hospital-acquired severe sepsis in an academic setting.
2012 Apr - A double-blind, randomized clinical trial comparing soybean oil-based versus olive oil-based lipid emulsions in adult medical-surgical intensive care unit patients requiring parenteral nutrition
Umpierrez GE, Spiegelman R, Zhao V, Smiley DD, Pinzon I, Griffith DP, Peng L, Morris T, Luo M, Garcia H, Thomas C, Newton CA, Ziegler TR.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Apr 6. [Epub ahead of print]
OBJECTIVE: Parenteral nutrition has been associated with metabolic and infectious complications in intensive care unit patients. The underlying mechanism for the high risk of complications is not known but may relate to the proinflammatory effects of soybean oil-based lipid emulsions, the only Food and Drug Administration-approved lipid formulation for clinical use.
2012 Apr - Heparin or 0.9% sodium chloride to maintain central venous catheter patency: A randomized trial
Schallom ME, Prentice D, Sona C, Micek ST, Skrupky LP.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Apr 6. [Epub ahead of print]
OBJECTIVE: To compare heparin (3 mL, 10 units/mL) and 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl, 10 mL) flush solutions with respect to central venous catheter lumen patency.
2012 May - Effectiveness of stepwise interventions targeted to decrease central catheter-associated bloodstream infections
Munoz-Price LS, Dezfulian C, Wyckoff M, Lenchus JD, Rosalsky M, Birnbach DJ, Arheart KL.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1464-9.
OBJECTIVE: Determine the impact of three stepwise interventions on the rate of central catheter-associated bloodstream infections.
2012 May - Variability of antibiotic concentrations in critically ill patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy: A multicentre pharmacokinetic study
Roberts DM, Roberts JA, Roberts MS, Liu X, Nair P, Cole L, Lipman J, Bellomo R.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1523-1528.
OBJECTIVES: In critically ill patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy, we aimed to assess the variability of antibiotic trough concentrations, the influence of effluent flow rates on such concentrations, and the incidence of suboptimal antibiotic dosage.
2012 May - Predictors and correlates of dissatisfaction with intensive care
Hunziker S, McHugh W, Sarnoff-Lee B, Cannistraro S, Ngo L, Marcantonio E, Howell MD.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1554-61.
OBJECTIVE: Dissatisfaction is an important threat to high-quality care. The aim of this study was to identify factors independently associated with dissatisfaction with critical care.
2012 May - Guidelines for intensive care unit design
Thompson DR, Hamilton DK, Cadenhead CD, Swoboda SM, Schwindel SM, Anderson DC, Schmitz EV, St Andre AC, Axon DC, Harrell JW, Harvey MA, Howard A, Kaufman DC, Petersen C.; Crit Care Med. 2012 May;40(5):1586-1600.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a guideline to help guide healthcare professionals participate effectively in the design, construction, and occupancy of a new or renovated intensive care unit.
2012 Apr - Rewarming after hypothermia after cardiac arrest shifts the inflammatory balance
Bisschops LL, Hoedemaekers CW, Mollnes TE, van der Hoeven JG.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Apr;40(4):1136-42.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to simultaneously analyze the key components of the cerebral and systemic inflammatory response over time in cardiac arrest patients during mild therapeutic hypothermia and rewarming.
2012 Apr - The changing pattern and implications of multiple organ failure after blunt injury with hemorrhagic shock
Minei JP, Cuschieri J, Sperry J, Moore EE, West MA, Harbrecht BG, O'Keefe GE, Cohen MJ, Moldawer LL, Tompkins RG, Maier RV.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Apr;40(4):1129-1135.

2012 Apr - Cognitive and physical rehabilitation of intensive care unit survivors: Results of the RETURN randomized controlled pilot investigation
Jackson JC, Ely EW, Morey MC, Anderson VM, Denne LB, Clune J, Siebert CS, Archer KR, Torres R, Janz D, Schiro E, Jones J, Shintani AK, Levine B, Pun BT, Thompson J, Brummel NE, Hoenig H.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Apr;40(4):1088-1097.
Background: Millions of patients who survive medical and surgical general intensive care unit care every year experience newly acquired long-term cognitive impairment and profound physical and functional disabilities. To overcome the current reality in which patients receive inadequate rehabilitation, we devised a multifaceted, in-home, telerehabilitation program implemented using social workers and psychology technicians with the goal of improving cognitive and functional outcomes.

2012 Mar - Timing of neuroprognostication in postcardiac arrest therapeutic hypothermia
Perman SM, Kirkpatrick JN, Reitsma AM, Gaieski DF, Lau B, Smith TM, Leary M, Fuchs BD, Levine JM, Abella BS, Becker LB, Merchant RM.; Crit Care Med. 2012 Mar;40(3):719-24.
Objective: Early assessment of neurologic recovery is often challenging in survivors of cardiac arrest. Further, little is known about when to assess neurologic status in comatose, postarrest patients receiving therapeutic hypothermia. We sought to evaluate timing of prognostication in cardiac arrest survivors who received therapeutic hypothermia.
